Cowes could host German Xmas market | | | | 11 September 2008 | People planning ferry crossings to Isle of Wight in the run-up to Christmas may get the chance to visit a traditional festive German market in Cowes, according to reports.
Discussions were held on the proposition at the monthly meeting of the Cowes Town Council and most members gave their support to the idea.
Town manager Graham Deacon supported the idea of holding a German market in Cowes but said that it may be too late to organise an event for this year, reports the Isle of Wight County Press.
Mr Deacon said: "The Germans do Christmas well and really have the spirit of it. They will be able to sell their wares and at the same time bring a lot of people into the town."
Cowes mayor Geoff Banks said that a German market was a good idea but pointed out that the Cowes Business Association (CBA) may be in opposition to the prospect as it could impinge on their trade.
The CBA will be consulted before town authorities go ahead with any plans for a festive market.
Brits interested in paying a visit to the Isle of Wight at Christmas time can catch Red Funnel ferry crossings from Southampton to Cowes, as well as Wightlink services to Fishbourne and Ryde from Portsmouth and to Yarmouth from Lymington. |
