The government of Northern Ireland has stressed the importance of good customer service if the region is to continue attracting visitors on ferry breaks and other trips.
Speaking at a Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) conference in Enniskillen, tourism minister Arlene Foster revealed that the government of Northern Ireland has set a target to attract 2.5 million annual visitors by 2011.
Ms Foster said that this is achievable as the destination has "much to offer", including "vibrant cities, first class hotels" and "stunning scenery".
She added: "Caring for our visitors and offering them top quality customer service are vital ingredients that can help us to grow our tourism industry by providing unique and lasting memories for tourists.
"Research by NITB has consistently shown that the local appeal and friendliness of the Northern Ireland people are features that set us apart. We must exploit this."
Holidaymakers interested in visiting Northern Ireland this year can sail from Liverpool to Belfast with Norfolkline, or make use of the Stena Line ferry crossing from Stranraer to Belfast.
The Republic of Ireland is also accessible by sea, with Dublin ferry services available with operators including P&O Ferries,
Irish Ferries and the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company.
