Experienced travellers are becoming wise to some of the tactics employed by no-frills airlines, according to
DFDS Seaways.
The ferry operator said that an increasing number of people are realising that carriers' advertised prices often fail to tell the full story, as passengers will find themselves paying additional fees and charges.
John Crummie, UK managing director of
DFDS Seaways, said that holidaymakers could also be inclined to turn to ferry travel this year for a more relaxing and enjoyable journey.
"Travelling by sea is far more relaxing than the experience that many of us have had of travelling through airports. You can simply pack up the car with everything you need and drive onboard," he said.
"Travellers have also become wise to the no-frills airlines that were once the option for bargain travel now having expensive 'add-ons' and are becoming more reluctant to book."
DFDS Seaways announced this week that 531,000 people travelled on its Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry route in 2009, marking a record year for the service.
The company's customers also have the option of taking ferries to Esbjerg from Harwich.
