DFDS Seaways has revealed that it "bucked the trend" that emerged in the travel industry last year by carrying more passengers on its Newcastle to Amsterdam ferry route than ever before.
A total of 531,000 people used the service in 2009, an increase of ten per cent from the previous year.
The operator introduced a link between Newcastle and IJmuiden, the port just outside Amsterdam, in May 1995, meaning the 15th anniversary of the route will be celebrated this year.
John Crummie,
DFDS Seaways' managing director, said: "2009 has been a turbulent year for the travel industry but I am pleased that we are bucking the trend and capitalising on the current economic climate.
"The daily crossings between Newcastle and Amsterdam are vital to tourism in the north-east as well as providing a gateway in to Europe for the region."
Mr Crummie attributed the success to a sense of disillusionment with low-cost airlines and the strong euro, which led to a 19 per cent increase in the number of inbound visitors to the UK.
DFDS Seaways also operates ferries to Esbjerg in Denmark from Harwich.
