DFDS Seaways has announced that its charity cruise in December 2008 was "hugely popular" and raised "a significant amount" for a good cause.
Rather than paying the usual fare for a DFDS Seaways ferry trip from Newcastle to Amsterdam on December 11th, passengers were asked to donate either £25, £35 or £50 during the booking process.
All of the contributions went to Children North East, the region's longest-running children's charity which provides emotional and practical support to families with young children who are facing difficulties.
John Crummie, UK managing director of DFDS Seaways, said: "We initially organised the charity cruises in 2006 to celebrate our 140th anniversary and they have proved so popular that we have continued them annually ever since.
"They really are an excellent way for people to give much needed donations to an excellent cause whilst enjoying a relaxing mini cruise break to Amsterdam."
Catrina Flynn, fundraising and PR manager for Children North East, said she was "truly overwhelmed" by the support that the charity has received from DFDS Seaways and its passengers over the last few years.
In addition to its ferry crossing from Newcastle to Amsterdam, DFDS Seaways sails from Harwich to Esbjerg in Denmark and from Copenhagen to Oslo.
