The summer holiday season may be in full swing, but one ferry operator is already looking forward to the festive period and the range of Christmas markets on offer to sea travellers.
DFDS Seaways encouraged customers to "embrace that festive feeling" and embark on a "magical trip" to one of Europe's most enchanting cities this winter.
One country that is particularly well known for its Christmas markets is Germany, with the medieval town of Hamelin providing the setting for a popular event every year and Cologne hosting several seasonal fairs.
Travellers can take
ferries from Newcastle to Amsterdam with DFDS Seaways and drive east through Holland to get to Germany.
Another option is to head to Denmark to visit Copenhagen, where the popular Tivoli Gardens turns into a winter wonderland at Christmas time.
Attractions including an outdoor ice rink and an array of sparkling lights are set up, as well as countless stalls selling gifts, decorations, souvenirs and festive food.
DFDS Seaways provides access to Denmark via the Harwich to Esbjerg ferry route.
Several other companies operate routes linking the UK to Europe, including
Stena Line,
SeaFrance and
TransEuropa Ferries.
