DFDS Seaways reveals rise in bookings

DFDS Seaways has revealed a strong rise in bookings this year and said that the figures highlight a "buoyant market for sea travel".

Since the volcanic ash cloud caused widespread flight cancellations in April this year, the ferry company's bookings have increased by 15 per cent compared to the same period in 2009.

Higher passenger numbers have been recorded on DFDS Seaways' ferries from Newcastle to Amsterdam as well as its Harwich to Esbjerg route.

Further growth is expected if a potential strike by airport workers goes ahead over the August bank holiday weekend.

John Crummie, the operator's UK managing director, said: "Since the volcanic ash cloud in April we have seen a significant increase in bookings, particularly in the number of people taking their vehicles for a summer holiday in Europe.

"Consumers are increasingly discovering the fact that sea travel is convenient, stress-free and value-for-money. This is especially evident for families - we are already seeing an increasing trend for family bookings in October half term, with bookings over 20 per cent higher than the same period last year."

DFDS Seaways, which recently acquired Norfolkline, is one of the largest ferry companies in Europe.

It offers daily crossings from Newcastle to Amsterdam and up to four weekly ferries from Harwich to Esbjerg.
