DFDS Seaways has announced that it will offer additional ferries from Harwich to Esbjerg this week to meet demand from travellers.
The company will bring forward the launch of the Dana Sirena, which had not been scheduled to sail until the end of the week, in order to help people affected by the air travel crisis across Europe.
There have been widespread flight cancellations throughout the UK and Europe over the past few days as a result of a cloud of volcanic ash that has drifted across the continent from Iceland.
DFDS Seaways announced that the Dana Sirena will be brought out of dry dock today (April 20th) and will operate four extra return crossings on the Harwich to Esbjerg ferry route up to April 24th.
John Crummie, managing director of the ferry company, said: "We have been doing all that we can to help travellers reach their destination.
"In response to phenomenal demand, we have brought the m.s. Dana Sirena out of dry dock early to increase the number of options for stranded travellers."
Several other operators have experienced a substantial increase in passenger numbers as a result of the aviation lockdown, including
P&O Ferries and
Irish Ferries.
