DFDS ferry to Amsterdam rises to student rowing challenge | | | | 06 November 2009 | While most passengers on ferries to Amsterdam just sit back and enjoy the ride, a team of students have teamed up with operator DFDS to 'row' across the North Sea.
In what is being pitched as a battle between man and machine, the team from Newcastle University plan on take on a top passenger ferry in a race between the north-east of England and the Dutch capital.
For the duration of the 15-hour crossing, they will make use of two specially-installed rowing machines on board the DFDS Seaways ship, with monitors allowing them to chart their progress against the ferry.
Speaking prior to departure, team leader Andrew Curry told the Richmond and Twickenham Times: "I think it's going to be exceptionally tough but it's definitely doable."
The effort, which, despite the rivalry has the full support of the DFDS captain, is aimed at raising money for charity and comes just days after the operator launched a new promotion on its Christmas breaks.
According to DFDS Seaways, travellers taking ferries to Amsterdam or Esjberg will be able to enjoy a 'truly magical' Christmas, while also benefiting from some excellent festive shopping.
