Danish truckers block ports and bridges in protest

Copenhagen - Danish supermarket chains said Monday consumers need not hoard goods in the wake of a wildcat protest by Danish truck drivers that have blockaded motorways, bridges and ferry terminals at several locations. The blockade targeted truck traffic and was aimed at protesting the high fines truckers face for traffic infringements in Denmark under joint European Union rules that for instance stipulate mandatory rests.

Among the bridges blockaded was the Oresund Bridge that links Denmark and Sweden and the 20-kilometre-long Storebaelt Bridge over the Great Belt, a strait between the main Danish islands of Zealand and Funen.

The blockade of the Storebaelt Bridge impacted trucks heading for Funen and was likely to cause delays of deliveries of packages and letters, the Danish postal services said.

A spokesman for the truckers said the actions might be stepped up to include private vehicles that currently were allowed to pass, the online edition of the Jyllands-Posten newspaper said.

Ferry operator Stena Line's terminal in Frederikshaven northern terminal experienced long queues although private vehicles and buses were allowed to pass, local media reports said.

The Frederikshaven terminal serves ferries heading for Norway, and impacted trucks heading for the Scandinavian country.

Bent Kobberup of Stena Line told news agency Ritzau that the illegal action cost sizeable sums and the group was considering seeking compensation.

A blockade was temporarily staged at the Grenaa terminal, and long lines were also reported from the port of Helsingor where ferries ply the route to Helsingborg, Sweden.

Traffic began flowing normally early Monday between Germany and Denmark after blockades took place in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein late Sunday at Harrislee near the German city of Flensburg and along the Ellund motorway, a German police spokesman said.
