Delight at boost to ferry port numbers
Portsmouth Continental Ferry Port is on its way back.
Figures released today have revealed a boost in passenger levels - thanks to people buying more homes abroad.
A total of 2.2m passengers went through the port last year, making it one of the busiest in the south.
Much of this is down to people visiting their homes abroad.
A survey by the port showed that between 2005 and 2006 there was a 12 per cent rise in the popularity of ferry travel for this very reason.
The research also revealed the destination ports of Caen and Bilbao are enticing the most travellers, with over half of Portsmouth Continental Ferry Port's passengers going to either of these.
And with 88 per cent of passengers expected to use the port again within the next year, it seems ferry travel from Portsmouth is on the up.
The research also revealed that ease of access was a big draw for users.
Even residents from as far north as Scotland made up 31 per cent of the vote for the port being 'easy to get to'.
City economic chief Mike Hancock said: 'I'm delighted. It's good news for the city and long may it continue.'
Nationally ferry passenger numbers are beginning to go up again following years of falling numbers caused by cheap flights.
