Delve deep into Chamonix |  | | | 27 August 2008 | People planning ski holidays to Chamonix over the coming months will have the opportunity to take a day off from the piste and discover more about the science behind the unique landscapes of the Alps.
Until October 1st, Chamonix's Musee des Cristaux will present a range of geological and mineralogical exhibits, many of which are from private collections.
The displays feature pieces of rock taken from the Mont Blanc massif, including smoked quartz and pink fluorine.
Visitors will also be able to take part in a journey through time that explains the formations of the rocks and their colours, structures and origins.
In addition to the displays of local minerals, there will be exhibits of pieces from the southern Alps, the Gothard, the Himalayas, the Rocky Mountains and Namibia.
People on ski holidays in Chamonix will be able to find the Musee des Cristaux in Espace Tairraz.
Chamonix is one of the leading ski resorts in the Alps and has been welcoming travellers for more than two-and-a-half centuries. It is located near Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. |
