The Port of Dover has celebrated today's (February 12th) launch of the new LD Lines ferry crossings to Boulogne and Dieppe in northern France.
Bob Goldfield, chief executive of the ferry port, pointed out that the LD Lines ferry crossing from Dover to Dieppe will cut out some 250km of driving for people who would previously have sailed to north-eastern ports such as Calais or Dunkerque.
Underlining the benefit of the new services for tourists, Mr Goldfield said passengers "will now be able to choose to cut out road miles to their holiday destinations and get the chance to walk around, eat a meal and take a break while on board".
He added: "For many, the holiday atmosphere starts as soon as they land at Boulogne or Dieppe."
Mr Goldfield said he was "delighted" that ferry operators are investing in new services at Dover, but stressed that the extra routes highlight the "acute need" for a second terminal at the ferry port.
LD Lines offers two daily return ferry crossings from Dover to Boulogne and one daily round trip between Dover and Dieppe.
The operator also sails from Portsmouth and Rosslare to Le Havre, while its sister company
Transmanche Ferries provides a service between Newhaven and Dieppe.
