Dover ferry port announced recently that it 'bucked the UK economic trend' in January, with a substantial year-on-year increase in passenger numbers.
There was a 20 per cent rise in car numbers recorded in the first month of the year, equating to a 14 per cent increase in the overall number of passengers boarding Dover ferry crossings.
In total, nearly 750,000 people travelled through Dover in January and the number of cars was close to 150,000.
As it released its figures, the ferry port cited research by design and engineering consultancy Scott Wilson indicating that performance at Dover is in correlation to UK business activity as a whole.
Port of Dover chief executive Bob Goldfield said: "Research of the activity at the port over the past 12 years shows Dover to be a true barometer of the economic condition of the UK as a whole.
"We only hope that Dover's continued growth will soon be reflected in the overall state of the UK economy."
P&O Ferries and Seafrance both operate ferry crossings from Dover to Calais, while Norfolkline sails from Dover to Dunkerque.
