Dover ferry port seeking capital to fund improvements
Travellers using Dover ferry port in the future could benefit from a number of improvements following the Harbour Board's application to the government to introduce private capital.

It was announced that a formal proposal has been made to the secretary of state for transport to move the port into the private sector.

The board said that a change from public to private ownership would ensure that funding is available to deliver new capacity, which will be necessary to meet the needs of customers and the travelling public.

Roger Mountford, chairman of the Dover Harbour Board, said: "Dover has a port of which it can be very proud. Over recent years the port has grown and broadened its business and improved its efficiency.

"Like its customers, it has to maintain this momentum. To do this the port needs access to private capital and to benefit from new opportunities."

Dover is a major port for British leisure travellers heading to Europe, hosting services including LD Lines' ferries to Boulogne and Calais ferry links provided by P&O Ferries and Seafrance.
