Dover ferry traffic on the up for Christmas

There was a rise in the number of people catching Dover ferry services in November as Europe's Christmas markets began to attract visitors, it has been announced.

The Port of Dover revealed that it saw an increase in motoring tourists, coaches and overall ferry passenger numbers last month compared to November 2007.

Following the release of the figures, the port said that Christmas appears to be "firmly on the agenda" despite the current financial problems faced by consumers.

Kate O'Hara, head of marketing at the Port of Dover, said: "The rising popularity of Christmas markets, on the continent and in the UK, attracts many people to cross the Channel – and of course, keen pricing in the French supermarkets continues to appeal to those looking to stock up their supplies of wine and beer.

"This year we are also seeing a big increase in the number of French and Belgian visitors coming to the UK to take advantage of the favourable exchange rate."

Holidaymakers can currently catch Dover ferry services to the ports of Calais and Dunkerque with Seafrance, P&O Ferries and Norfolkline.

Next year, LD Lines will introduce new ferry crossings from Dover to Boulogne and Dieppe.
