Dover to work with other ports to aid development | | | | 21 October 2008 | Officials from the Port of Dover are to work with counterparts from the ports of Calais in France, Tanger-Med in Morocco and Algeciras in Spain to share best practice and support development, it has been announced.
The partnership is intended to improve port operations, safety, security and marketing at all four of these locations.
A meeting was held in Dover last week that completed a round of familiarisation visits to all four ports involved in the partnership.
The Dover meeting focused on ferry operations and traffic management and followed a gathering in Calais that saw the officials discussing security issues.
Bob Goldfield, chief executive of the Port of Dover, said that the partnership is a sensible one as the similarities between the Tanger to Algeciras and Dover to Calais ferry routes are "remarkable".
"Both offer short sea crossings across busy straits and provide strategically important links for trade," he added.
"All four ports have ambitious development plans they want to deliver over the next few years and we expect the partnership to be very useful in sharing ideas and experiences."
In the week commencing September 22nd, some 58,500 tourist cars, 2,683 coaches and more than 305,000 passengers travelled through the Port of Dover as it helped handle the fallout of the fire in the Channel Tunnel on September 11th. |
