Europe 'better prospect than US for skiers' | | | | 24 October 2008 | Increases in travel costs in the United States mean that resorts in Europe are a more affordable option for people planning ski holidays this winter, according to a new report from the Post Office.
The study found that destinations all over Europe, including the 'big three' of France, Switzerland and Austria, are set to benefit from price rises in American resorts, despite the strength of the euro against sterling.
Ski holiday costs in the US are thought to have soared by around 55 per cent in the past year as a result of higher resort prices and the recent slump in the value of sterling against the dollar.
While prices have also risen in Courchevel a popular location for people taking ski holidays in France the Post Office reported that tour operators have still seen strong bookings as customers move away from US resorts.
Helen Warburton, Post Office head of travel, said: "Although the pound will not stretch as far for UK skiers as in previous years, there is still good value to be had.
"Resort prices in France, Austria, Switzerland and particularly Italy look good value when compared with the US while the emerging ski resorts outside the eurozone...will be excellent choices for beginners and for families on a tight budget."
British travellers planning ski holidays in France or any overseas destination can pick up foreign currency at over 8,000 Post Office bureaux de change around the country. |
