The recent air travel disruption caused by the eruption of a volcano in Iceland has led passengers to opt for more reliable modes of transport, according to
Eurotunnel.
Airports across the UK and Europe were shut down for a period of six days in April as a result of the threat posed by the volcanic ash cloud, with further flight cancellations occurring this month.
Eurotunnel revealed that calls to its contact centre went up by 40 per cent on May 17th as people sought alternative ways of travelling to Europe.
The Channel Tunnel operator also said that an increasing number of customers are opting to use the car shuttle service to France rather than relying on air travel.
Ferry operators have provided a valuable alternative to airlines over the past month, with
P&O Ferries,
Stena Line and
Irish Ferries among the companies to report substantial increases in passenger numbers as a result of the flight cancellations.
Sea travel could continue to prove important over the coming weeks for the thousands of passengers likely to be affected by planned strikes by British Airways' cabin crew staff.
