Travellers planning to travel through the Channel Tunnel for their holiday this year may be happy to hear that operating company Eurotunnel has received the Carbon Trust Standard for reducing its carbon footprint.
The award was given after the Carbon Trust Standard Company assessed a number of measures that Eurotunnel has introduced to reduce its environmental impact.
These include reducing the amount of energy used for tunnel cooling and the transfer of electricity supplies to low-carbon sources in France.
Jacques Gounon, chairman and chief executive of Eurotunnel, said: "With more and more customers making purchasing decisions based on a company's impact on the environment, sustainability is an essential element of future business success.
"The Carbon Trust Standard is the benchmark for companies to achieve. It is a rigorous and demanding measure of our impact on the environment and I am delighted that Eurotunnel has passed with flying colours."
Travellers looking for an eco-friendly way to reach the continent also have the option of catching
