Holidaymakers planning to use the Channel Tunnel for their trips to the continent this year will be able to take advantage of full service capacity through the tunnel from February 10th.
Eurotunnel, the owner and operator of the undersea link, said that the section that was damaged by the fire in September last year will be reopened during the night of February 9th-10th.
A series of tests will take place before full capacity is restored, less than four months before reconstruction work on the tunnel's interval six section first began.
Eurotunnel pointed out that the return to full service will come before Valentine's Day and the start of the half-term holidays, a traditionally busy travel period.
Jacques Gounon, chairman of
Eurotunnel, said: "I congratulate all those involved, from
Eurotunnel's teams and the companies selected by the group. They have delivered the restoration of interval six in record time.
"This performance means we can restore the speed and ease of Channel crossings that make
Eurotunnel a unique product."
Eurostar confirmed that it would begin operating faster and more frequent rail services through the Channel Tunnel from February 23rd.
