Eurotunnel has announced that it experienced a record summer this year, with a 17 per cent year-on-year increase in the number of cars carried on passenger shuttles between July 1st and August 31st.
Overall, some 533,238 cars made the 35-minute crossing between Folkestone in Kent and Coquelles in the Pas-de-Calais region in northern France during the two-month period.
Eurotunnel's previous record for the number of passenger vehicles carried on a single day was broken on August 14th this year, when the operator handled 14,825 cars and 150 coaches.
On July 21st, the company welcomed the 250 millionth customer to be transported through the Channel Tunnel since services began in 1994.
Jo Willacy, Eurotunnel's commercial director, said: "The intense activity through the summer shows that 'Le Shuttle' is the perfect answer to our customers' expectations: it is value for money and respectful of the environment.
"Our whole commercial strategy is aimed at increasing our traffic and our performance this summer is an incentive to continue in the same vein."
Holidaymakers heading across the channel also have the option of taking a
ferry to France, with
Norfolkline/
DFDS Seaways operating regular
ferries from Dover to Dunkerque and both
P&O and
SeaFrance serving the
Dover to Calais ferry route.
