Eurotunnel is today (July 21st) celebrating the passage of the 250 millionth traveller through the Channel Tunnel.
The equivalent of half the population of the European Union have now used car, coach and lorry shuttle services and Eurostar trains to France and Belgium since the travel link opened in June 1994.
An average of 43,000 people are transported through the tunnel every day.
Jo Willacy, Eurotunnel's commercial director, said: "The Channel Tunnel is now a vital link between Great Britain and the continent. It is a reliable route for people and goods, which has become indispensable in Europe: 250 million people travelling through is proof enough of that.
"Eurotunnel works hard to maintain the quality of its transport system every day, adapting services to customers' needs, improving reliability and respect for the environment, so we know we are ready to welcome the next 250 million."
People heading to France from south-east England also have the option of going by sea via the
Dover to Calais ferry route, which is served by
P&O and
SeaFrance.
Other cross channel travel options include
Norfolkline's
ferries from Dover to Dunkerque and the Ramsgate to Ostend ferry route, which is served by
TransEuropa Ferries and
LD Lines.
