Eurotunnel reports "excellent performance"

Eurotunnel reports
Eurotunnel has announced that it has managed "excellent performance" in the third quarter of 2008 despite the recent incident in the Channel Tunnel.

The company, which manages and operates the tunnel connecting Britain to France, announced that revenues in the third quarter of the year were €189.2 million (£146.9 million).

This was down by six per cent and, according to Eurotunnel, revenues would have increased by five per cent if the tunnel had been open throughout September.

For the first nine months of the year, the company's revenue increased by five per cent to reach €575 million.

Eurostar services were particularly popular in the third quarter of 2008, with more than 2.3 million passengers, representing a traffic increase of six per cent.

In the nine months to the end of September, Eurostar welcomed more than seven million people on its services, an increase of 14 per cent on the previous year.

The rail company announced on October 1st that it was boosting its operations following the fire in the Channel Tunnel, with up to 16 trains a day in each direction between London and Paris and nine services each way between London and Brussels.
