Amsterdam will hold the title of World Book Capital until April 22nd 2009, giving ferry travellers plenty of opportunities to attend events celebrating literature and everything related to it.
The Dutch capital's year-long tenure as World Book Capital began in April 2008 and has brought all sorts of events to the city, including exhibitions, concerts and parades.
Until January 4th, visitors to Amsterdam will be able to visit a travelling display at the Amsterdam Public Library dedicated to the Austrian writer Stefan Zweig.
Between January 28th and February 1st, the city will present the Weerwoord festival, which will be celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2009.
This multidisciplinary festival, in which literature plays a key role, will be held at locations including Theater Bellevue and the music venues Melkweg and the Paradiso.
Amsterdam boasts plenty of attractions for visitors to see while they are not attending festival events, including the historic city centre and museums dedicated to Ann Frank and Vincent Van Gogh.
DFDS Seaways sails directly from Newcastle to Amsterdam, while P&O Ferries offers services from Hull to Rotterdam and Stena Line operates a route from Harwich to Hook of Holland.
