Increasing numbers of families are booking ferry crossings during term time in order to get more for their money during their holiday.
This is the suggestion of a survey carried out by Tesco Bank, which found that almost half (44 per cent) of families are intending to go on holiday during the school term rather than wait until peak season.
Family Holiday Association director John McDonald said it is "very understandable" that recession-hit families are searching out cheaper term-time holiday deals.
"Many children can be given authorised absence from school for a week and many headteachers understand the benefits that that can bring for the child, the family and the school in general," he commented.
Mr McDonald went on to say that approximately one in three British families are not able to afford an annual break.
Some 63 per cent of respondents to the Tesco Bank survey said they would opt for a term-time family holiday because they would save money on the costs of travelling during the school holidays.
