Millions of Britons never go abroad because they are scared of flying, a new study has revealed.
A study by Premier Inn indicated one in 20 adults has never left Britain because they are terrified of taking to the air.
It also revealed one in ten people have used other means to travel to Europe - such as a ferry - because they are unwilling to get on board a plane.
A spokesman for Premier Inn said: "The results show that it's a common phobia and many people live their lives around their fear of flying."
Some people might have missed out on the Spanish sunshine because of this fear, perhaps through not being aware that ferries from the UK serve destinations farther away than France and the Low Countries.
However, companies like
Brittany Ferries can help, as they run services from Portsmouth to Bilbao and from both Portsmouth and Plymouth to Santander.
