Ferries are back as P&O reports passenger growth

P&O Irish Ferries today announced an increase in traffic in 2007 and proclaimed that ferry travel was making a comeback.

James Esler, the company's sales and marketing manager, said its services from Larne to Scotland had shown significant year on year increases.

He said passenger numbers were up by 6.7% while vehicle carryings were 15% higher than in 2006, representing an additional 2,500 cars per month.

Mr Esler said: "2007 has been an exceptional year and we are predicting that 2008 will continue to see the trend back to ferry travel.

"Our customers know that travelling with us can be quicker and more convenient than flying, as well as better value for money."

Mr Esler said that a new pricing structure introduced last year meant that the earlier customers booked, the cheaper the fare they could secure.

He said that 70% of P&O Irish Sea customers were now booking online and benefiting from further savings.

P&O Express services are due to recommence on March 14, in time for the St Patrick's weekend and the Easter holidays and will run until October.

Mr Esler said: "We are predicting that the ferry travel trend will continue as passengers continue to weigh up value for money and convenience against airport frustrations, hidden airline charges and baggage restrictions."
