Six ferry companies are cooperating with tourism authorities on a campaign to encourage more people to take summer breaks in Ireland this year, it has been revealed.
Tourism Ireland announced that it had launched a 20 million (£17.2 million) initiative to inform people of the "excellent value" on offer in the country and tap into a late booking trend.
Ferry operators will contribute to the marketing drive by launching car touring promotions, which will encourage people from the UK, Germany, France and other European countries to come to Ireland with their own vehicle.
Both
P&O Irish Sea and
Norfolkline offer
ferries from Liverpool to Dublin in Ireland, while
Stena Line and
Irish Ferries serve the Pembroke to Rosslare ferry route.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Irish tourism minister Mary Hanafin said: "While 2010 continues to be a very difficult year, we still have everything to play for in terms of winning the business that is out there - over 60 per cent of our overseas visitors arrive between May and September.
"We must get out there and fight for that business which is the lifeblood of this industry."
Ireland is connected to France by sea routes including the Cork to Roscoff ferry link, which is operated by
Brittany Ferries.
