Ferry popularity increasing due to airport delays
Airport delays may be driving more people to book ferry crossings. Nearly 43 million ferry crossings to and from British ports were made last year, an increase of 419 000 on the 2006 total. This was the second successive year that numbers increased and followed falls in the early years of this decade, according the the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA).
Routes between the UK and Ireland experienced good growth, with numbers rising 4.3% to 5.5 million journeys. PSA director Bill Gibbons said an increasing number of passengers were turning away from airports towards ferries due to continued strike threats, missing luggage and airline charges.
