Ferry travel 'becoming more popular' | | | | 01 September 2008 | A number of factors are combining to make ferry crossings to holiday destinations a more popular option for British people, it has been claimed.
William Gibbons, director of the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA), said that ferry travel is "definitely" becoming more popular owing to the range of benefits it offers on travel to the continent and to Ireland.
He said that a key factor in the growing interest in cheap ferries is luggage and the bad publicity that resulted from the "chaos" at Heathrow airport's Terminal Five earlier this year.
"When you take your car on a ferry you can take as many passengers as you can legally get in a car and as much luggage as you want," Mr Gibbons said.
"You don't have to worry about weight, you don't have to worry about hand luggage, you don't have to worry about excess charges."
The PSA director said that low-cost airlines consistently increasing their excess baggage charges and strictly enforcing their weight limits underlines the practical benefits of travelling by ferry.
People taking ferry crossings from the port of Dover in August this year were asked to compare travelling by sea to flying. Eight out of ten people said ferry ports were better for check-in and more flexible than airports and seven out of ten said that the cost of ferry travel is better than plane travel. |
