People travelling from the UK are likely to show a preference for destinations that they can reach by ferry this year, according to an industry expert.
Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Services, pointed out that the pound is beginning to regain some of its lost value against the euro, suggesting that countries such as France and Spain could prove increasingly popular.
These destinations can be reached by sea with operators including
Brittany Ferries,
LD Lines and
P&O Ferries, a fact that will count in their favour, according to Ms Munro.
"With sterling beginning to strengthen against the euro and discounting in many popular eurozone resorts, we expect these to do well in the coming months - particularly destinations that can be reached by ferries rather than air," she said.
The Post Office spokeswoman highlighted Spain as a country that can offer "tremendous value" through low living costs, a factor that could encourage travellers to take
ferries from Portsmouth to Santander with Brittany Ferries.
Stena Line and
Irish Ferries recently revealed that they have seen a substantial increase in demand this week as a result of airport closures in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
