The wide range of ferry travel options available between the UK and France makes the European country an affordable and convenient option for summer holidaymakers, according to an industry expert.
Nick Trend, editorial director at travel information portal Simonseeks, said the fact that countries such as France and Spain can be reached by sea is a significant factor in their favour.
Both
P&O Ferries and
SeaFrance provide easy options for people planning a French break with their
ferries from Dover to Calais, while
LD Lines offers a Portsmouth to Le Havre ferry service.
Commenting on destinations he expects to be popular this year, Mr Trend said: "This summer I would say France is a good option especially if you are prepared to take the ferry and drive to your destination. There is also lots of choice and good value offerings in Spain."
For families who will be going away during school holidays this year, Mr Trend pointed out that the May half-term period and late August are likely to be cheaper than peak times at the end of July and beginning of August.
Those who choose to visit Spain have the option of taking
ferries from Portsmouth to Santander with
Brittany Ferries.
