Ferry travel has more to offer now than ever before, with vessels kitted out with state-of-the -art facilities to make the experience all the more comfortable.
This is according to director of the Passenger Shipping Association Bill Gibbons, who explained that ships are luxurious these days, offering everything from entertainment to gourmet meals.
"Some ferry journeys offer an overnight crossing with en-suite cabins so you can arrive refreshed before a full day of driving ahead of you – the experience resembles more a mini-cruise than a simple crossing," he explained.
For example, on
Brittany Ferries, passengers can enjoy all sorts of facilities as they travel to their destinations.
The De Luxe and Club 4 Plus cabins, for example, have everything from tea and coffee making facilities to flat-screen TVs, complimentary soft drinks from the mini bar and a presentation box of toiletries.
As for entertainment,
ferries from Portsmouth to Caen and
ferries from Plymouth to Roscoff have facilities on board the majority of crossings.
These include children's play areas, games rooms and slot machines, cinemas, and in some cases, even onboard swimming pools.
Mr Gibbons explained that it is far from only the ships that have become particularly impressive over recent years, as the routes covered by ferries are just as exciting.
"With destinations including the coasts of northern Spain, Brittany and Belgium … easily accessible from the ferry terminals, much of Europe is reachable," he commented.
The expert also recommended catching
ferries to Ireland for some real culture, as cites such as Dublin, Cork and Belfast can all be reached from nearby ferry ports.
Other options include Amsterdam and Copenhagen, as well as Boulogne and Lille, showing that the opportunities are endless when it comes to exploring Europe by ferry.
