Holidaymakers who decide to travel by ferry this year have been informed that they can look forward to receiving "exceptional" value for money.
Penny Guy, PR director at the Passenger Shipping Association, pointed out that there are many factors working in the favour of sea travel this year, including recent problems in the aviation industry caused by volcanic ash and airline strikes.
These events have led many people to seek out alternative forms of travel, Ms Guy said.
She added: "The ferry can offer not only reliability but it's also convenient in a sense that you can take everything with you and it's exceptional value - the price you see is the price you pay."
The PSA spokeswoman also highlighted the range of locations that are accessible by sea, with companies such as
Brittany Ferries,
Stena Line,
DFDS Seaways and
P&O Ferries providing access to several different countries from the UK.
"[Ferry travel] can take you to wonderful destinations," she said. "Not only to the continent but also nearer to home, such as the Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Wight.
"Further afield there's Spain, the south of France and the mainland continent."
Stena Line recently announced that positive trends in the ferry industry have put the company on track for a record summer this year.
