Ferry travel could prove a popular option for families who want straightforward, affordable holidays next year, according to the managing director of news provider TravelMole.
Commenting on the destinations that are set to be popular next year, Graham McKenzie said that holidaymakers are likely to look at places closer to home, "if not home itself".
He added: "Potentially there may be an upsurge in ferry bookings, so people will be able to shove all their stuff in a car and just jump in with their kids and everything and just go off to France, Germany or Spain.
"Those will be the popular destinations and also city destinations that still offer good value for money."
Mr McKenzie said that the credit crunch is likely to make European destinations the biggest "winners" over the next 18 months as travellers think twice about visiting long-haul destinations.
Ferry trips in and around the UK could see a boost in popularity over the coming months following exchange rate fluctuations, which recently led to the pound hitting record lows against the euro.
