Fishguard marina project could mean more ferries to Ireland

Fishguard marina project could mean more ferries to Ireland
A major marina project in Wales could bring new opportunities for ferry crossings in the local area, after it was revealed that there is widespread support for a £100 million plan to regenerate Fishguard Harbour.

The area has an illustrious history as a Viking trading post, the landing zone for a French army and even a film location. Constructed in 1906, Fishguard Harbour offered daily services to Rosslare, with crossings to Waterford and Cork later added.

Now plans have been drawn up for a 450-berth marina and a major expansion of the ferry port, potentially meaning it will serve as a hub for even more ferries to Ireland in the future.

The marina will contain workshops, stores, hundreds of residential apartments and a 19-acre platform that will expand Stena Line's existing services to Rosslare.

Plans will go before Pembrokeshire Council this week in a bid to strengthen Fishguard Harbour's position in Wales.

"The operation of Fishguard Harbour is central to the economy of the whole of the north of Pembrokeshire," said Pembrokeshire County Council leader John Davies.

"There is no doubt that development is needed to secure the future of the ferryport and to provide and sustain jobs for the area."

Head of coastal operations at Fishguard Harbour Neil Jacobson added that the redevelopment will bring "long-term economic benefit to the area".

Stena Line's area director for the Irish Sea said: "We look forward to working with all the relevant parties concerned to move these projects forward which are critical to our business and the local economy."

While ferry crossings are a vital part of the harbour's draw for tourists, the local beaches are also a favourite spot for sun-seekers.

Pembrokeshire has more Blue Flag awards than the rest of Wales put together, and the area contains many coastal paths for tourists to explore.
