One of the best ways for people planning a trip to France to save money is by taking a ferry from Dover to Calais, according to an article in the Daily Telegraph.
As part of a guide to visiting France on a budget, the paper said that even people travelling to regions in the north-west, such as Brittany, could find it more cost effective to sail to Calais and then drive the rest of the way.
There has been a "sharp fall" in the cost of ferry crossings from Dover to Calais over the past 20 years, according to Telegraph travel writer Nick Trend, but this has not been reflected on longer cross-Channel routes, where there is less competition.
People who book now with P&O Ferries or Seafrance for travel in the summer can pay less than £100 for one car plus passengers between Dover and Calais, compared to more than £300 in the early 1990s.
Another piece of advice offered to people planning holidays in France is to visit regions such as the Languedoc or the Lot, which boast beautiful scenery and good food at lower prices than better-known destinations such as the Dordogne.
Holidaymakers planning to see Paris during their trip could save some money by using the Paris Museum Pass, which costs £25 for two days and covers almost all of the city's major museums and monuments.
