Travellers planning an island break this summer will be guaranteed a memorable experience if they decide to visit Greece, if a recent awards survey is anything to go by.
The 2010 World's Best Awards programme, which is run by Travel and Leisure magazine, saw Greek hotspots occupy two of the top ten positions in the category covering islands.
Readers voted the
Cyclades, with the exception of Santorini, their third favourite island retreat, behind only the Galapagos and Kauai in Hawaii.
Santorini itself took sixth place, ahead of famous destinations such as Maui and the Maldives.
Holidaymakers interested in visiting Santorini this year can reach the island with
Aegean Speed Lines,
Blue Star Ferries and LANE Lines.
Popular destinations in the Cyclades archipelago include
Mykonos, which is served by
Agoudimos Lines, and
Ios.
The Travel and Leisure World's Best Awards survey attracted a record number of votes this year.
Sicily, which is served by
Grimaldi Lines,
Tirrenia,
SNAV and other ferry operators, emerged as the seventh most popular island among readers of the magazine.
