Green concerns 'boosting ferry travel' | | | | 23 July 2008 | Travelling by ferry is becoming more popular as a result of growing concerns over the effect of aviation on the environment, a travel industry body has claimed.
Derek Moore, chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito), said that Britons are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of their holidays.
This appears to be having a knock-on effect on the popularity of alternatives to flying.
Mr Moore said: "Ferry travel is increasingly popular as Britons become more aware of the carbon footprint left by their holidays and look for alternatives to stepping on a plane."
The Aito spokesman also indicated that Europe is still a popular destination for ferry trips, with many holidaymakers deciding to stay close to home for their summer breaks.
"Despite the current strength of the euro against the pound, many holidaymakers are staying closer to home and taking a ferry is a convenient and cost-effective way to get to the continent," he said.
Travellers can cross the English Channel with a number of ferry companies operating out of the UK, including P&O Ferries, LD Lines and SeaFrance. |
