British people attach a particular importance to their ferry holidays and other getaways because they invest so much time and energy in their day-to-day work, according to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta).
Research by the travel association has found that many people value their holidays above a lot of other things that they could spend money on.
Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for Abta, said that one of the reasons for this could be the sense of relief that holidays offer from the pressure of work and everyday responsibilities.
"We know that people work very hard and we have the highest number of working hours in Europe," she said.
"As a result of that people need holidays to take a break from the pressure but also spend valuable time with their loved ones and families, which they would not be able to do in a normal working week."
Abta recently released a survey which showed that two thirds (66 per cent) of British people value their summer holiday as it gives them an emotional boost.
Holidaymakers planning to visit France for their summer getaway this year will have some new travel options to choose from when LD Lines launches ferry crossings from Dover to Dieppe and Boulogne.
