Holidaymakers 'squeezing in shorter trips' | | | | 01 August 2008 | Holidaymakers are boosting the number of trips they are able to take each year by squeezing in shorter breaks, according to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito).
Ian Bradley, a spokesman for Aito, said there is a trend emerging in the holiday market of people wanting more adventure and excitement and travellers are realising it is possible to achieve this on short breaks.
Mr Bradley said that adventure holidays can be any duration from three of four days to a fortnight.
He added: "You don't have to take three weeks off to do an adventure holiday or an activity holiday, you can do it pretty quickly
without taking too much time off work."
The Aito spokesman said that Europe is an important region for adventure travel, with destinations ranging from Iceland to the island hotspot of the Azores offering plenty of exciting opportunities.
According to a study carried out by research company Mintel, the number of adventure holidays being taken increased by 17.2 per cent between 2003 and 2007, meaning that this sector outperformed the travel industry as a whole. |
