UK consumers are taking domestic breaks in order to save money, new research suggests.
R3, the trade body for insolvency professionals, commissioned a survey by GfK NOP which found that 38 per cent of people are trying to spend less money on holidays this year.
More than half (56 per cent) of this group have decided not to go abroad in order to cut down on their travel expenses.
There are many options available to people planning a 'staycation' this year, such as taking
ferries from Portsmouth to Fishbourne with
Wightlink and exploring the Isle of Wight.
Commenting on the recent trend, Frances Coulson, vice-president of R3, said: "The fact that so many people will be holidaying in the UK is good news for the domestic tourism and leisure sector, which has been badly hit during the downturn."
The over-65s were found to be the least likely to cut holiday costs, with only 22 per cent of people in this age group trying to spend less money on going away.
Travellers opting for domestic getaways this year can also take
ferries to the Isle of Man with the Steam Packet Company or book crossings with
NorthLink Ferries to see Scotland's Northern Isles.
