ferries to Ireland could soon find they are making their journeys on hybrid vessels, which are soon to undergo construction in Scotland.
These will be the first hybrid ferries in the world, which are to be powered by diesel-electric engines and batteries.
Vessels will be built on the banks of the Clyde, bringing around 100 jobs to local people and reintroducing shipbuilding to the area.
Scottish infrastructure and capital investment secretary Alex Neil said: "The two new ferries will come into operation in 2013 and are the world's first seagoing passenger and vehicle roll-on, roll-off ferries to incorporate a low-carbon hybrid system of diesel-electric and battery power."
He emphasised that the new ferries will be quieter and cleaner, as well as much cheaper to operate.
Each of the ferries will be able to accommodate 150 passengers and 23 cars and will demonstrate some of the finest green technology available in the present day.
