The past year has brought about a return to "traditional travel values" as consumers have become disillusioned with airlines, according to
Irish Ferries.
Throughout 2009, particularly in the run-up to Christmas, the operator noted a significant trend of consumers returning to ferry travel between Ireland, the UK and continental Europe.
Irish Ferries believes that the reason behind the change is a desire to get value for money and to avoid the stress of air travel.
Declan Mescall, the company's head of passenger sales, said: "Extra security, earlier check-in, longer pre- and post-flight delays, tighter baggage restrictions and all of the other measures that air travellers have to endure ... have meant that more and more people now prefer the comfort of travelling by car using ferry connections."
He also said that travellers like to have the option of bringing things back from their holidays without having to worry about weight allowances and extra charges.
Irish Ferries' services include the Pembroke to Rosslare and Holyhead to Dublin ferry links.
The company also provides access to France via the Roscoff and Cherbourg ferry routes from Rosslare.
