Holidaymakers should consider booking cheap ferries to the Isle of Wight after Christmas because the island serves as an appealing New Year retreat.
This is the opinion of Isle of Wight tourism, which said that there is plenty on offer for winter tourists, including "glamorous, gourmet party nights" and relaxing breaks in one of the island's many hotels.
A number of New Year's Eve events have been organised, including The Hipshaker at Ryde Theatre and fine food and wine at The Seaview Hotel.
Holidaymakers can wave goodbye to 2009 by taking part in December 31st's Norman fortress walk, a six-mile ramble around the Isle of Wight's countryside from Carisbrooke's Norman fortress.
The walk will take in Gatcombe's 13th-century church and will incorporate a pub lunch.
Those wanting to cover more ground can hire a bicycle and explore some of the island's 200 miles of cycle paths and 12 marked routes.
Wightlink announced last month that it was offering early bird tickets to revellers wanting to attend next year's Isle of Wight Festival, which kicks off on June 10th.
