Wightlink has confirmed that its
Lymington to Yarmouth ferry service will continue despite a ruling that the route is unlawful.
The decision to introduce W-class ferries on the service in February last year was in breach of the European Habitats Directive, the High Court found.
However, Mr Justice Owen accepted that
Wightlink had followed the correct procedures and had consulted appropriately before rolling out the new ferries.
In a statement, the ferry company said that the breach was not intentional and that it will now assess what steps to take to address the issue.
"
Wightlink intends to take such steps once the outcome of Natural England's stakeholder engagement regarding
Wightlink's mitigation proposals is known and as soon as
Wightlink has received Natural England's revised formal advice," the company added.
"These mitigation proposals have been made widely available by both
Wightlink and Natural England to ensure full engagement and comment."
