Isle of Wight ferry firm goes pink for charity | | | | 30 October 2008 | Support has been shown for breast cancer by a ferry operator which has tied a huge pink ribbon to one of its boats.
Wightlink, which operates services between the ports of Fishbourne and Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight opted to decorate its flagship ferry, the St Clare, in an effort to raise money for the national charity.
The ribbon will be proudly displayed for the duration of Wear it Pink Day, with passengers and crew members invited to dress up in the charity's colour and make a donation to the cause.
Kerry Jackson, marketing manager for Wightlink, told Portsmouth Today: "Our staff members actively participate in Wear it Pink Day every year and now Wightlink will match donations from staff to mark our support for the campaign."
Presently, the Isle of Wight is connected to the mainland UK by three different ferry operators, all of which cross the Solent year-round.
According to marine historians, the earliest ferry services to the island began in 1420, while fisherman in the 18th century were placed onto a rota and required to operate return trips to and from Portsmouth every day. |
