For a destination that always has something going on no matter what time of year it is, the Isle of Wight could be just the place to visit.
With regular ferry crossings from the UK provided by
Wightlink, the island could be closer than you think for a short break in January 2012.
The programme of events gets underway next month, with the Isle of Wight Wassailing planned to take place on January 14th.
This is a pagan fertility ceremony that dates back as far as the 15th century, which involves waking the fruit trees from their winter slumber as darkness descends.
Participants have a glass of hot mulled apple juice of cider to hand, which they pour on the roots of the trees to ward off evil spirits. Toast is soaked in the drink as well to feed the robins.
Everyone is then asked to join in with the tree Wassail song, after which as much noise as possible is made to keep evil at bay.
Another top event planned for next month is a performance from the Isle of Wight Symphony Orchestra on January 28th.
They will be performing a rendition of the Joseph Horovitz Oboe Concerto at the Medina tickets, with tickets priced at £13.50 for adults and £6 for children.
Brahm's Tragic Overture and Schumann Symphony No 2 are also to be performed at the concert, which gets underway at 19:30 GMT.
If you plan to start the New Year in good spirits, then a winter bird walk arranged by the National Trust could be just the right activity.
Taking place on January 7th, walkers will make their way around Newtown National Nature Reserve, where they are sure to see plenty of fascinating species.
Interested parties are asked to meet at the visitor point car park opposite Newtown Old Town Hall at 10:00 GMT - admission is free of charge, although donations to the National Trust are welcome.
