Isle of Wight rock Festival makes ferry tills sing out
WIith no Glastonbury Festival scheduled for 2006, WightLink reports early bookings for this year's Nokia IW Festival are booming.
WightLink, which offers inclusive entrance and travel tickets for the event, says its bookings are running around 250 per cent ahead of 2005 levels, based on 2006 sales to January 18 compared with 2005 sales to January 31.
WightLink marketing director Janet Saville said the dramatic rise in bookings was interesting since this was the first year festival tickets had been sold as a three-day pass rather than individually for each of the concerts.
"This shows that it's the festival itself that is now attracting visitors rather than the allure of individual bands," she said. "It's significant that people are prepared to pay for a three-day ticket without knowing exactly who they will be seeing.
That's a great measure of the enthusiasm that exists for the event, which is helping to change the profile of the Island."
WightLink also reports sales of three-day camping tickets, which combine ferry travel, festival entrance and camping pitch, have quadrupled against the same period in 2005.
Taking place from June 9 to 11 at Seaclose Park, Newport, the Nokia IW Festival will feature innovative electronic band The Prodigy as headliner on the opening night, supported by Goldfrapp, Placebo and the Rakes.
More top names are expected to be announced soon. WightLink saw a near three per cent increase in the number of vehicles it carried in the 12 months ending September last year, and a 1.5 per cent increase in foot passengers across its routes.
Red Funnel also reported a successful 2005 with the company's passenger carryings increasing by 3.83 per cent.
It reports its share of the car market on its Southampton to East Cowes route rose by 10.03 per cent and enjoyed good growth in the commercial vehicle sector with an increase of 13 per cent compared to 2004, and in coach traffic, which grew by six per cent.
Colin Hetherington, commercial director, said: "2005 was a challenging but extremely positive year for Red Funnel and we are looking forward to building on this success during 2006."
He added that ferry and accommodation-inclusive packages to key Island events, such as the IW Festival and Bestival, are already on sale.
